Killing Her Boyfriend

When Miami police arrived at Courtney Clenney’s condominium on the afternoon of April 3, they met her cradling her boyfriend, who was bleeding from his injuries.

After being stabbed in the chest, Christian Obumseli, who was 27 years old, was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital, which was located nearby. Unfortunately, he was shortly pronounced dead.

Clenney was charged with Christian Obumseli’s murder. According to an arrest warrant affidavit, investigators stated that the incident was the result of an escalating “violent and toxic” relationship between the two individuals.

Their relationship was violent and toxic

Clenney however maintained she acted in self-defense.

According to the affidavit submitted by authorities, while both Courtney Clenney and Christian Obumseli had been involved in several instances of domestic violence since November 2020, it was Clenney’s actions that intensified and led to the fatal incident.

Investigators stated that Clenney and Christian Obumseli had been in a relationship for over two years before the fatal incident occurred. Friends of the couple have mentioned that the two first met in Austin before relocating to Florida together.

Courtney and Obumseli

Courtney Clenney and Christian Obumseli were residing in a three-bedroom apartment on the 22nd floor of the One Paraiso Residences, an upscale building located in Miami. The apartment boasted a stunning view of the Biscayne Bay.

What Really Happened on April 3

According to the affidavit, investigators reviewed key fob records which indicated that Christian Obumseli left the building at approximately 1:15 p.m. and returned at 4:32 p.m. with sandwiches he had purchased from Subway. Meanwhile, Courtney Clenney was finishing up an Instagram video and had made a call to Obumseli at 4:01 p.m. followed by another call at 4:33 p.m., just as Obumseli was entering their apartment.

Courtney Clenney made a call to 911 at 4:57 p.m. as per the affidavit. During the call, Clenney was heard apologizing and calling out “baby.” In the background, a man’s voice could be heard stating that he couldn’t feel his arm and that he was dying.

The crime scene

Neighbors had reported a disturbance to the building security, who in turn contacted 911 at 4:46 p.m.

Courtney Clenney informed the police that Christian Obumseli had pushed her against the wall by her neck and subsequently threw her to the ground. She added that she then picked up a kitchen knife and launched it at Obumseli from a distance of at least 10 feet, which penetrated his chest.

Investigators observed that there were no visible injuries on Courtney Clenney that suggested that she was attacked by Christian Obumseli.

The autopsy performed by Miami-Dade County Chief Medical Examiner Kenneth Hutchins revealed that the knife had punctured an artery in Christian Obumseli’s chest, resulting in his death.

Hutchins concluded that the wound could not have been inflicted in the manner that Clenney had described, but instead must have been caused by a “forceful downward thrust.” Based on his findings, Hutchins ruled the death a homicide.

At her court appearance, which took place towards the end of the previous year, a date was scheduled for a status conference on Monday, February 6, 2023. These conferences are conducted prior to the trial and provide an opportunity for the judge, prosecutor, and defense team to come together and discuss the case’s progress.
